~ Legend of the Astral Hammer |
The Hammer of Glory,[1] also known as the Astral Hammer[2] and Holy Flaming Hammer,[3] is one of the three Relics of Legend said to be created by the Starlords.[2]
History[]
Eons before Dundee was founded, the Starlords (known to ancient Dundonians as "gods of warfare"[4]) waged war against an unknown evil in 10000 BD and defeated it with the three relics.[5] Afterwards they descended to Earth and hid the three Relics to "safeguard from doom" in Caledonia,[2] concealing the Hammer in a shrine within the Cairngorm Mountains.[5]
On September 15th, 992 AD, after the fall of Dundee to Zargothrax's undead unicorn force,[6] Angus McFife I set out to claim the Hammer. After a dream revealed its location to him,[7][8] he quested into the Cairngorm Mountains first to retrieve it.[1] He then used the Hammer to defeat both a demon barring his way into the "enchanted chamber with mirror and fire" and the Magic Dragon within the forests of Strathclyde,[9] before rallying the Knights of Crail and The Hootsman to his cause.[10] In the siege of Zargothrax's citadel, Angus boldly fought the wizard in single combat, but failed to land a killing blow, instead sending him into a pool of liquid ice.
In 1527 AD, Angus McFife V used the Hammer to discover a way to break Anstruther's dark prophecy concerning Dundee's fall.[11]
Nearly five centuries later, in 1992 AD, the Hammer of Glory is in the possession of Angus McFife XIII. He used the Hammer to battle both goblins on the dark side of the moon[12] and demons from Mars,[2] but failed to stop Zargothrax's true plan of summoning Kor-Virliath. Instead the Hootsman sacrificed his own life to destroy Earth and thwarted the wizard; Angus somehow survived the Neutronic Transnova explosion, presumably with the Hammer's aid, and followed through the resultant wormhole into the Terrorvortex.[13]
Terrorvortex[]
Angus arrived ten centuries into the past, in 992 AD, to discover Dunkeld under siege by the Deathknights of Crail and overseen by Zargothrax. Angus attempted to land a killing blow but discovered, to his horror, that the Hammer of Glory had lost all its mystical power the moment he crossed realities.[14] Forced to flee for his life, Angus runs into Ralathor in Achnasheen; the hermit advises him how to recharge his weapon.[15] Angus followed these instructions successfully and repowered the Hammer.[4]
In 993 AD, the D.S.S Hootsforce arrived into Cowdenbeath to face Zargothrax's forces in battle. After Ralathor's vaporization of the Deathknights, and the deity Hootsman's arrival, Angus was finally able to strike dead Zargothrax. Unfortunately, his Hammer was unable to prevent his own impalement with the Knife of Evil. Angus subsequently heroically descended into the volcano Schiehallion to die before corruption.[16]
Universe 38B[]
In an alternate reality, after Dundee was nuked by Zargothrax Clone Alpha-1 in 1022 AD,[3] the Hammer of Glory (known as the Holy Flaming Hammer) was inherited by Angus McFife II, who swore to avenge his father's death by any means necessary.[17] It was displayed levitating before the throne of Dundee during the thirty years of peace between Zargothrax's defeat and his clone's awakening.[18]
In 1042 AD, Angus returned from outer space to take his vengeance.[17] After consulting with the oracle of Glenrothes,[19] Angus and his companions made their way towards the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde to locate another artifact of the Starlords, the legendary Laserblaster. Below the ruins of Dundee, the heroes encountered a Goblin Sword Lord, who barred the way unless Angus defeated him in single-combat.[20] Securing victory with the Holy Hammer in hand, the heroes journeyed on, only to discover the Laserblaster had already been taken by the clone and that he was en route to Crail.[21][22]
Quickly securing the allegiance of the Robot Prince of Auchtertool, Angus raced to the fortress only to find the broken Brotherhood defeated and Zargothrax freed. The Robot Prince is swiftly slain by the Knife of Evil, and his armies incapacitated upon his death, leaving Angus to face the Double Wizard alone. However, before an epic battle is fight, the Starlords unexpectedly intervene and end the war, slaying everyone for "[their] foolish meddling with the three artifacts" except Angus, whom they invite to join them. The Hammer is confiscated by the Starlords, along with the other two Relics.[23]
Properties[]
Described as a weapon of "ultimate steel",[1] the Hammer was forged in the heart of a star and empowered with raw solar energies, being able to channel the "powers of the universe".[24] Its unique construction, a "crystal enchantment of steel", is likely what enables this,[2] and this empowering seems to be permanent and is only affected when the Hammer crosses realities.[14] Additionally this enchantment prevents anyone not a warrior "with a heart pure of steel" from wielding it.[1]
The Hammer's maul may contain traces of meteoric metal.[11]
When the Hammer lost its original might upon entry in the Terrorvortex,[14] Angus McFife XIII was compelled to soar through the corona of a native star to manually recharge it.[4]
Angus McFife I initially believed the Hammer could crack Princess Iona's prison of ice.[25] The Hammer has the power to permanently end Zargothrax's life by breaking his immortality.[26][16] Additionally, the Hammer possesses additional force or enchantment to make enemies' heads "explode with fury" by channeling its wielder's wrath.[27]
In Universe 38B, the Hammer is believed to be wrought from "unholy cosmic frost" an as yet unknown material that may be synonymous with ultimate crystal enchantment of steel.[3] Angus McFife II also claims the "force of [his] Holy Hammer will rage through time" if he is defeated.[20]
Non-canon material[]
In the Hootsforce music video, Angus McFife XIII channels the Hammer's power through the D.S.S. Hootsforce, sending a shockwave that disabled the third Chaos wizards' spaceship.[28] In the Keeper of the Celestial Flame music video, the Hammer is shown to overwhelm Zargothrax's hastily thrown up magic shield, and apparently glows when near a member of the Fife bloodline. It also cracked the liquid ice prison within the fortress of Crail.[29]
